Challenges & Goals
How might we prevent mental health misdiagnosis on TikTok through misinformation and start taking action by looking for legitimate resources or seeking health care professionals?
Will a "help" button connecting users to healthcare professionals and other resources be useful for any suspicion of mental illness instead of self diagnosing?
User Interview
📝 From each user’s experience with the app and their perspective of social media, we can understand their insights on how social media is connected with mental health issues
Interview Insights
Overwhelming Amount of Misinformation
Users are being bombarded with a huge amount of misinformation on TikTok, especially mental health-related contents
Inappropriate Content Affecting Younger Users
Inappropriate content and misinformation are negatively impacting younger users’ understanding about mental health
Lack of Mental Health Resources
There aren’t many resources offered on TikTok for users to better understand mental health issues and avoid misinformation
Problem Statements Based on Insights
👨🏻💻 Based on the user interview insights, we then developed the problem statements which ultimately address the mental health issues happening on TikTok
Identifying Top Problems
🧐 Narrowing down some top problems under both business and user value help us understand which problem we need to prioritize in our design
“How Might We…” - The Solutions
💬 All top problems then developed into one “How Might We” question which helps our team bring about endless possibilities! We then focused on 3 best solutions based on their feasibility and impact
User Flow
✏️ Coming up with a “map” of how I want the users to interact with the app to seek help (find a therapist, gain more resources or joining the community)
Wireframing
Sketch 1: The “Help Button”.
The idea of the “Help Button” option is developed to be a shortcut for users to access the resources they need easily without interruption in user journey
Sketch 2: Find a Therapist
The layout prioritizes quick and easy process of providing personal as well as health information so users can be led to the professionals as soon as possible
Sketch 3.1: Resources - News & Articles
In tackling misinformation and disinformation, we focus on how users can access and interact with news and articles to gain accurate knowledge about mental health issues, helping to counteract the prevalent misinformation on TikTok.
Sketch 3.2: Resources - Podcasts
An alternative to reading news and articles is listening to podcasts which also provide valuable insights and information on mental health
Sketch 4: Community
We designed “Community” as a beacon of support where users can join various groups tailored to specific mental health experiences, allowing them to connect and interact with others facing similar challenges
